Read Origin side of handout (just read, no notes necessary)

Period 3
Finish reading pg 23 in Holt textbook and take Cornell style notes
Then, Answer the following questions:

1. According to Bruchac, what is one important thing that Native American literature has in common with ancient European classics?

2. Consider what Bruchac says about the authors whom he names. What have these writers done for Native American literature?

3. What is oratory? How does it relate to the message of the essay?

4. Why do The Odyssey and Beowulf matter in this essay?


5. Why do you think that the title of the essay is titled, “The Sun Still Rises in the Same Sky”?

Gravid: I became gravid with ideas of what to write my short story on that it was too hard to choose.
Gravitas: Mr. Walker has such gravitas when he is teaching a class.
Gravitate: The new boy seemed so mysterious and charming, I quickly became enamored and always would gravitate in his direction.
Gravity: When I finally blew up and expressed myself no one realized the gravity of the situation, since I usually withhold a lot of emotion.
Alleviate: Ibuprofen helps alleviate my headaches.
Elevate: I prefer using elevators or escalators because you elevate to the next floor quicker than you would with stairs.
Leavening: The leavening effect helped the mood of the sullen room.
Levity: The other team had levity, it made our team look uptight.

The gravid woman was annoyed when all the children commented on her belly.

The head of the NBA never failed to carry himself with the gravitas he felt was appropriate to his office.

During basketball season, fans of me gravitate to the gymnasium to watch me play.

Laughing and horsing around during practice, the team failed to realize the gravity of their situation until the practice was over and they had only learned one play out of eight.

Ice and heat alleviated the physical pain, but the mental pain of not being able to play football with the rest of my teammates mad me sadder.

When I hurt my ankle two nights ago the doctor told me to keep it elevated above my heart.

(2) Gravitas: The enlarged man spoke with such gravitas, to be sure he would scare away the attempting burglar.

(3) Gravitate: The man at the fair practiced his tactic for several years to be sure to gravitate almost every person toward what he was offering.

(4) Gravity: Speak with gravity in your tone, to ensure your seriousness.

(5) Alleviate: Susan took two pills to alleviate the headache that her children had given her.

(6) Elevate: The doctor made sure to tell his client to keep his ankle elevated to reduce the swelling.

(7) Leavening: Her presence can leaven my day no matter what mood I'm in.

(8) Levity: When my boss speaks to me with levity, it really upsets me.

1. Gravid- As i walked past the health center, i saw a gravid lady approach a gym.

2. Gravitas- As soon as i felt the bee stinger penitrate my skin i knew the situation was very gravitas.

3. Gravitate- In order to pass my classes this quarter i need to gravitate my attention towards my education.

4. Gravity- This type of gravity is not the scientific gravity. (Just kidding Ms. Ramirez)

4. Gravity- When i heard the news about my addicted mother, i was too young to realize the gravity of the situation.

5. Alleviate- In order to alleviate my friends mental illness she had to take a lot of medications.

6. Elevate- In order to sleep comfortably, i had to elevate my feet so the blood could flow properly.

7. Leavening- At oour last family reunion i knew that at the end of the day i was definitely not the leavening of the crowd.

8. Levity- During family night my house mates levity was horrid.

1. Gravitas - I am lacking gravitas in my work ethic and I am improving it.

2. Gravitate - When I do show my true potential in certain areas of interest and my blown charisma, people's being and attention gravitates towards me.

3. Gravity - The gravity of my conviction in music and the career I want it to follow, is one that is unbreakable.

4. Alleviate - Once every two weeks I alleviate the "working" schedule and life I have usually by spending my time at Barnes & Noble.

5. Elevate - Last week Paramore's "Brand New Eyes" album and single "The Only Exception" sales elevated up the charts! "TOE" zooming up from position 57 to # 25 next to Glee's cover of it. The album "BNE" went up from position 104 to # 91 due to the sales of digital sales of "TOE".

6. Leavening - Watching personal videos of the band Paramore, watching them being there own selves is always the leavening to my downshifted moments.

7. Gravid - Snooki from Jersey Shore always an annoying, gravid black ball of hair on her head!

8. Levity - Levity does not exist in my motivation for college, never will, never has been.
