I don't think some of the authors of the Declaration of Independence actually believed everyone should be equal. Even today equality is still a problem because not everything can be controlled. They said that in the eyes of their creator everyone is equal but really in the eyes of another, someone always has it better. No matter what they say there are always going to be things that will divide people. Their intentions were good but I think they even knew it would never be fully applied.
